My Next Cell Phone...

Those who know me, know I am a gadget guy guy. Things I cannot live without, started as wanting a gadget. I think it may have started with the mechanical pencil. As early as I can remember, I enjoyed mechanical pencils. But that was just a start. I get the gadget thing from my Dad. He loved things like CB radios (if you are younger then 30, look it up), police scanners, and Wizard Organizers. If he were around today, he would have an iPhone, a Tom Tom GPS system and live on the Yahoo Games playing card games with his son.

Now when comes to gadgets Im cheap, I always love a new toy, but the budget tends to be on the cheep side, and with cell phones have been the way to try new advances in technology for a little money. I have always been impressed with the the little things that we so take for granted now. Things like color screens, games, size (I loved the original Motorola StarTac), Flip keyboards, GSM Triangulation, Wi-Fi, touch Screen, and of course applications.

I bought my iPhone literally a week after the price break and have loved it so far and this is the longest I have had one phone (18 months) without switching. I cannot get along without it. Checking bank balances, traffic, email, listening to radio, challenges other at Texas Holden, finding the nearest coffee house, the weather in Rio, Price comparing to confirm a good price, proving who was number 1 and 2 in the 1998 NHL Draft, oh and by the way make a call or send a text message.

Now I could go on and on about things I can do with my iPhone but hey, we all have seen the Apple commercials. However lately, I have gotten an itch to get some new. Why.. because I want a new toy, try something new, but frankly, there is nothing that compares.

I recently looked to see what compared to the phone I had to getting something new. I knew it had to be smartphone, so with that I was limited to Palm (not a phone) Windows Mobile (don’t get me started), BlackBerry and the iPhone. I also knew I wanted 3G, Touch Screen, Wifi, and Exchange or Push email. Well guess what I only found one phone the BlackBerry Storm, and guess what, its only Verizon.

So I contemplated changing carriers, I can’t complain about AT&T (I will save that for another blog article), as the service here is fine. Price wise they are about the same, the Storm did have some cool features that the iPhone was lacking and vice versa. So it all came down to the apps. Would I be able to find the apps for the storm that I have grown to not live without?

The answer to that is I don’t know, and decided not to find out.

I went to BlackBerry’s site to download their app store, and the first problem, Im a Mac Guy, and it only supports Internet Explorer. So, I fire up the dell download the app store, and low and behold, I need to download a USB Driver for the BlackBerry.

I havent even bought the Storm, and already Im getting angry so 5 days later, I still haven’t gotten to do a simple search on a few dozen apps.

iPhone, you are here to stay, maybe an upgrade to 3G, but you are here to stay!

What will your Next Cell Phone be?
